What's a Madrigal Dinner?

Madrigals are songs that were composed during the Renaissance and Baroque eras; they were usually performed accapella (without accompaniment). King Henry VIII even wrote and sang some of his own madrigal music.

A typical madrigal dinner begins with a cocktail reception, and continues as you enter into the Great Hall (a transformed dining area). The Lord and Lady of the manor, along with their royal court of performers, will begin the evening with the Wassail Song as hot mulled cider is served. As each course is served, songs, skits and merriment will abound.

At our madrigal dinners, we strive for the perfect balance of humor, fun, and beautiful, poignant music. We encourage audience participation, and at many of our events, the audience will dress up as well and try out their own British accents! The madrigal dinners were originally started by the Opera Colorado Guild for fundraising events, but after the Guild dissolved, the group stayed together and now performs at numerous Country Clubs, churches, opera companies, and benefits all over the state. We do utilize a piano for some of our songs, but if one is not available, we bring our own!

About our Singers

Our singers have all either sung with Opera Colorado or are part of the local Colorado operatic community. They are trained musicians who love performing, and do so at multiple venues around the state, including the Ellie Caulkins Opera House. There are usually 12-16 singers who perform at the madrigal dinners.

Can I have a Madrigal Dinner?

Yes you can! We are available to perform at almost any venue. We have performed for many charities, including the Senior Hub (they utilized the Denver Merchandise Mart for their dinners), and have helped them reach their goals for fund-raising. We also have performed in churches, country clubs, restaurants, and even outside! We can customize our dinner for your event; and we are also available to perform in smaller groups, for concerts, and small events.
